Nobody likes nosy neighbours, and they are even more frustrating when they have a direct view into your garden!

It can be very difficult to maintain privacy in a back yard. This is an especially large problem when living in a large city, but can just as easily manifest itself in a small town or village. However, believe it or not there are some very simple ways to protect your garden from prying eyes and reclaim your privacy. Let's take a look!

Small dividers

One of the best ways to cordon off your own space and send a message that says no peeping, please is to build a wall or a fence to shield your garden. Houses often come with garden dividers, but unfortunately many of these are low, full of holes, and offer no privacy whatsoever.

A wooden fence can be built quickly, and on a very low budget. Trailing plants, paint, and hanging lanterns can then be added to beautify and add character. A more permanent solution would be to build a brick or stone wall – this would last for years, but will almost certainly involve the help of a professional and a little more cash. For those who want to add a touch of privacy without cutting off the neighbours completely, a partial partition wall, as seen here, shelters intimate relaxation spaces of your garden without sending out an anti-social vibe to your neighbourhood.

Use nooks and crannies

If you're lucky enough to have more than just a small patio for a garden, it's likely that you will be able to find a little bit of space tucked away that will allow you to set up an outdoor dining area or sun-spot.

However, all is not lost if there isn't a ready-made nook in your garden. By putting up a small garden shed, a trellis panel, or even a line of potted plants, you can create a perfectly private corner yourself.

Let the plants take over…

Following on from the last point, you could consider looking to nature for help in creating a sheltered garden. Climbing plants are becoming increasingly popular, and take hardly any time at all to grow over a trellis and form a thick curtain of foliage that only x-ray eyes would be able to see through!

You could also take the traditional route and plant a large, thick hedge – or even a row of evergreen trees – for year-round protection.

… or use the pots themselves!

Sometimes, we just want a quick fix, no-fuss solution. If planting new trees and hedges sounds like too much bother, or your rental home won't allow you to make major changes to your garden, then consider buying potted plants to arrange around the boundaries of your garden instead.

Potted plants that suit a variety of climates are available year-round for remarkably low prices. A quirky mixture of towering potted shrubs, flowering bushes, and kooky cacti could be just the ticket for blocking the view into your outdoor space.

Let it all hang out

A beautiful garden isn't always necessarily a large one, and you certainly don't need to let a lack of space get in the way of your privacy! If space is a little limited, opt for a beautiful AND functional solution – hanging plants!

Dangling trees like weeping willows add a whimsical, fairytale quality to any garden, and also provide a natural curtain of leaves to keep you out of sight. Hanging baskets filled with trailing flowers and ivy work just as well and take up far less floor space, allowing you to make the most of your petit garden.

Build it up

We are very used to planning our gardens horizontally, but what about using all of that vertical space? Vertical gardens are the new hot trend in interior and exterior home design, but not many people have pointed out that they are also a great way of erecting a boundary between you and the outside world!

Instead of building a fence, get creative and build up the earth around the borders of your garden. include a rock garden, plant some shrubs, then take inspiration from some of these vertical gardens to build a living, flowering wall.

A leafy pergola

Pergolas are traditionally very solid, structured garden adornments, but their slatted canopies aren't great for maintaining privacy! This can be very easily remedied by weaving lush green foliage and trailing flowers through the structure, forming a thick coverage that also looks and smells amazing.

Create a labyrinth of paths

Finally, if your can't beat them – confuse them! Use your ingenuity and imagination to create a winding labyrinth of paths, trees, climbing plants and little hideaways – nosy neighbours won't know where to look! This also makes for an exciting garden design for young families – imagine the games your kids could play in this garden. Best of all, you'll know that you're the only person keeping an eye on them!
