Sometimes, the best part of designing a space is the outdoors, where landscaping is a priority. Landscaping is essentially the art of beautifying your outdoor space, which includes everything from lining flower beds with a lane of cobblestones to paving a perfect patio for entertaining.

There are many different components to crafting a gorgeous landscape, like choosing garden arrangements, edging around your patio or deck and installing light fixtures to illuminate summer nights. As overwhelming as it may seem, this is an area where creativity can truly thrive while you create your dream environment for outdoor relaxation. To get you started, here are a few simple ideas to upgrade your landscaping.

DIY outdoor lighting

When the sun goes down, keep your garden alive and bright with some cozy, twinkling lights. Outdoor lighting is not only practical when it comes to entertaining outside at night, but it can also add an element of romance and warmth. You could string fairy lights around the patio, light tiki torches or create a DIY masterpiece, like this Victorian-esque candle display.

Warm up with a fire pit

On the topic of lighting, what better way to cozy up on a cool summer night than with a fire pit? This is an amazing and worthwhile project to invest in for patios, as garden gatherings can stretch well into the evening. We recommend hiring a professional, like Bestall & Co Landscape Design who built this traditional stone fire pit, to ensure safe installation and a beautiful design.

Add a water element to the greenery

Water features bring enchantment to your outdoor space. The flowing water, as in a bird feeder or a small pond, contribute to an almost dreamlike setting. Homemade ponds do require some work, but are absolutely worth the effort. We love this Victorian-esque bird bath (which is actually solar-powered!) by Primrose. You can see more of their amazing water feature options here.

Spruce up your space with a green wall

If you’re in an urban setting, ground space can be extremely rare—but that isn't necessarily a hindrance. Utilizing vertical space, green walls are the perfect solution. These eye-catching walls also have thermal and acoustic benefits. The greenery absorbs noise and solar radiation, which can help your home stay cool in the summer. Bonus points if you mix textures and colours, like this upscale wall by Ece Botanik.

Mix materials to make a stunning deck & patio combination

Building a patio or deck is an ideal way to create a comfortable place to enjoy your yard after a long day of work. Mix up the materials to create an interesting variety of textures throughout the yard. We love this style-blended design by ROCOCO, which features a hardwood floor interior bounded by a faded wooden deck, plus a stone patio surrounded by the luscious, verdant grass.

Design a rustic patio with cobblestones

While wooden decking is always a classic, we also love cobblestones or bricks for laying out a patio. The addition of rustic furniture and thick greenery gives this design a cozy, English cottage appeal. You can find more ideas to perfect your patio here.

Layer your edging

Edging your garden is super easy, and can be done with almost anything. For simple designs, you can fill a trench with polished stones, lay bricks, use fencing, planters and even overturned wine bottles. For an added level of complexity and depth, layer your boundaries. This example, by Alexander John Garden Design & Maintenance, mixes a simple mowing boundary with a raised flower bed made from local stones, surrounded by trailing plants and overhanging trees.

Give your oasis some boundaries

Boundaries aren't just for shrubbery. You can use the same edging technique to add a level of sophistication and organization to your outdoor entertaining space. We suggest using stones, as shown in this gorgeous design, as well as bricks or hedges to section off your patio.

Combine colours

Let your creativity shine when choosing plants, where mixing colours is absolutely encouraged. Choose opposites for an eye-catching effect, like this colourful display of alpine plants by Ice Alpines. On the other hand, you can opt for different hues of the same colour for a more sophisticated look, such as lavender with teasels and cat mint.

Get creative with different kinds of foliage

Creating a captivating garden relies on using foliage with a variety of growth patterns. Think fillers, climbers/trailers and main attractions. As in this design, the Mediterranean foliage climbs the wall and hangs over it, while the shrubs beneath frame the brightly coloured flowers. This creates a lush and diverse garden.

Choose eye-catching centrepiece plants

Main attraction foliage isn't restricted to your garden bed. Instead, trees or large, striking flora can serve as the centrepieces of a patio. These hydrangeas, framed precisely between two trees, are the perfect example. You can find more ideas for decorating your garden with plants here.

Embrace interesting planting pots

Don't be afraid to get creative when it comes to pots and planters. Adding interesting containers to the garden diversifies the landscape. Potted plants are especially useful in urban spaces, where they can easily be hung up or moved for lack of ground space.
