If you're renting a home, you obviously won't want to invest in spending lots of money to renovate the kitchen, but there are simple upgrades you can make in your kitchen which won't burn a hole in your pocket. This article focuses on renter-friendly tips on how to improve your kitchen design.

Old Indian kitchens often have exposed plumbing and wiring which can be quite unsightly, but they can also be easily hidden away from sight with a little bit of creativity and not much money. There are also several other ways you can improve the aesthetics and function of your kitchen affordably without making any major structural changes (for which you may need the permission of your landlord) that we will describe in further detail in this article, so read on…

1. Use open shelving

Open shelving gives you a chance to decorate your kitchen while creating a storage space for items needed. For example, you can store all your herbs and spices in pretty containers so that they double up as decorative pieces as well, since many modern kitchens don't have the adequate space to place ornaments on shelves.

2. Add more storage

For small kitchens, slim sideboards are the best way to add more storage to your kitchen, and also the most affordable way. Old Indian kitchens are often designed with inadequate storage space, but there is a pretty simple way of adding more storage by attaching sideboards to the kitchen walls.

3. Wall-mounted shelving

You can also use wall-mounted shelving to save space in your kitchen and make it look more organised and neat. This will prevent clutter from building up and turning your kitchen into a chaotic 'war zone'.

4. Use storage baskets

Storage baskets can help you separate and organise items so that you can easily find exactly what you need without having to mess up the cupboards or cabinets. You can stack the baskets on top of each other to save space, or lay them out side by side if you have enough space.

5. Show off your pretty crockery

Instead of keeping your pretty crockery hidden away, use them to decorate your kitchen. You can place them on shelves on even hang them on your wall if you don't have enough space on your kitchen shelves. If you don't have pretty crockery to show off, you can always hang some nice pictures on the wall.

6. Create a trolley island

A kitchen island is probably not an investment you might want to make if you're renting, but a trolley island which can be rolled around is quite affordable and actually more practical anyway. You can use the trolley island to store things you need while cooking or use it to serve guests as well. The trolley island can be as big or small as the space in your kitchen will allow without feeling cramped.

7. Stick cute labels on all your masala containers

You can make it funky or you can make it vintage, be creative and stick something visually interesting on your containers. There's no need to buy fancy containers, when you can personalize your kitchen with your touch more.

8. Add some curtains

In order to hide exposed plumbing and messy open shelves, you can add some curtains so that they're hidden out of sight and the kitchen looks more presentable. All you need to do it tie up a curtain line with some rope and put up some curtains. The curtains also add character and softness to your kitchen, making it a more integral part of the home, but make sure you keep the fabric away from the stove area.
