There’s nothing quite like stepping into a steamy shower at the end of a long day or a hard workout. Morning showers also help many of us transition into the day. Showers leave us rejuvenated and refreshed while also offering us some moments of true peace and privacy. They're an integral part of any home, so it's important to pay attention to the quality and appearance of our bathroom when introducing new shower elements.

We tend to put lots of effort into constructing a shower with the finest materials and designing them with the perfect colour schemes, but equally as aesthetically significant is the shower cover. The shower cover can create a sense of seclusion and solace for the person inside the shower, and it serves as a transitional threshold between the shower and the rest of the bathroom

There are plenty of ways to divide your shower from the rest of your bathroom. Here are our favourites!

The practical option: a curtain

The most practical and straightforward option is, of course, the humble shower curtain – they're cheap and come in countless colours and styles. You could opt for a vibrant shower curtain to liven up a neutral space like we can see in this bathroom by Juniqe, or pick one that matches existing colours and patterns to create a better sense of cohesion in the bathroom.

A white or transparent shower curtain can also help to create a greater sense of space in a small bathroom. Furthermore, the shower curtain helps to clearly define the shower area and gives a person plenty of privacy while washing.

A discreet option: transparent screen

If your primary concern is to have a discreet shower space, a transparent screen is likely the best option for your shower. The transparent nature of the shower cover will allow for more aesthetic continuity within the bathroom and thus create the illusion of space. The transparent screen could be solid plastic, glass version as pictured above, or a curtain hung from a rod.

For those who feel more comfortable showering while still being able to maintain visibility of the rest of the bathroom, the transparent curtain will allow you to do so better than opaque options. You can also choose a translucent curtain in varying colours to match the bathroom and still gain the benefits of visibility.

An elegant option: glass screen with decorative vinyl

If you’re looking to bring a bit of decorative sophistication to the bathroom, we recommend going with a glass screen with decorative vinyl decals like this one. It can be tricky to fully maximise space in a bathroom that’s on the smaller side whilst still making it feel elegant and stylish. This is an excellent way to decorate using the essentials in the bathroom rather than cluttering it with unnecessary ornaments. This look is very art deco and will help give your bathroom the elegant flair of the Gatsby mansion!

A classic option: full glass doors

If you’re looking to create visual continuity between the shower area and the bathroom but are also hoping to go a little bit more grandiose than the transparent screen, we’ve got you covered (no pun intended!).

Including a shower with full doors is a classic and luxurious look. Opting for full frameless doors will help to keep these doors from overpowering the bathroom’s aesthetic. This style fits nicely into modern and minimalist design but it can really work in just about any style. For example, this bathroom has a bit of a tropical and even rustic touch. The glass doors add spaciousness and clarity to the room. A common variation of this look is to use sliding doors rather than conventionally hinged ones.

A rustic option: a stone half wall

If you’d like to go fully rustic in the bathroom or simply to add a bit of rawness to the existing look, dividing the shower with a half stone wall is an excellent way to make things feel earthier. You can go with a smooth textured stone wall that invites a bit of modern style to the look, or you can always opt for a rougher natural finish, depending on your preference.

By including a simple shower wall rather than a full curtain or screen, you will be creating a more open and natural feel between the shower area and the rest of the bathroom. A half wall also comes with the added bonus of creating a small shelf for housing soaps, shampoos, and other shower supplies.

A retro and stylish option: mosaic half wall

For a more retro, glam variation of the stone half wall, try a shimmering mosaic half wall like we can see in this bathroom. Mosaic tiling has been used to decorate bathrooms for thousands of years. Today, there are so many options when it comes to mosaic tiles, and there is certainly a tile to fit any colour scheme. You can also choose to create images or patterns out of the mosaic tiles.

If your main motive for adding the mosaic wall is its classic aesthetic appeal, then you might also want to consider installing a glass panel above it to create extra definition between the shower and the rest of the bathroom. We think that this look would look great either way.

A free and natural option: without walls!

Finally, if all this talk of shower covering is only enticing you to be free of it altogether, we are here to encourage this possibility as well. The most natural shower covering option is to do away with it completely. You can choose this option for your outdoor shower, as we can see here, to create a completely liberating bathing experience. For privacy you can surround yourself with lush bushes and other hedges.

Better yet, if you live on a secluded property, taking efforts to ensure the shower’s privacy might not be necessary at all. Of course, this look can also be transferred indoors. It might seem like the shower curtain is an essential means of blocking out water from the rest of the bathroom. While this is true to an extent, if the shower area is a bit removed from the rest of the bathroom, such barriers aren’t actually that necessary.
