List the uses of baking soda and the first thing that hits our mind and imagination is piping hot pakodas, sumptuous Gujarati snacks of khaman and dokla or cake and cookies. I am sure it would never have occurred that this humble, unsuspecting pantry staple have immense superpower unless being told about. Today we are going to reveal the hidden wealth in this inexpensive, non-toxic, natural and white powder which is also known by the name of sodium bicarbonate. Believe us; it can turn up into your personal and versatile cleaning assistant, making your home sparkling clean in no time. Let’s get educated what magic we can do with this modest baking agent in our home.

All you need is ¼ cup of baking soda dissolved in 1 litre of water and you can deal with almost all of the challenging stains and dirt with confidence.

2. Let’s begin with kitchen

- Soak sponge in the basic solution of soda and water and wipe all the surfaces in your kitchen. It could be the counter-top, cabinet doors, tiles on the wall, backsplash or even the floor; it will shine them all.

- To keep your refrigerator smelling fresh and free of odour, keep an open box of baking soda inside the fridge. - To clean the stainless steel sink, sprinkle fistful of soda in the sink and scrub it. It will shine in no time.

- Sprinkle baking soda inside the dustbin before you start using it. It will keep the odour away and cleaning the bin will be easy. For deeper cleaning of the bin, wash the bin with 1 cup of baking soda dissolved in 3 litres of warm water.

- If the news about pesticides and insecticides in fruits and vegetables troubles you, then wash the fruits and vegetables in a sink full of water with ½ cup of baking soda dissolved in it. Rinse it after the wash and it is free of pesticides and insecticides.

- The stubborn stains of plastic storage containers will vanish when soaked for 15-20 minutes in a mixture of 1 part of warm water and 4 parts sodium bicarbonate.

- Sparkle your silvers with 3 parts of soda dissolved in 1 part of water.

- Burnt the food in pan? Don’t worry! Just sprinkle a fist full of baking soda in the burnt pan or pot, add warm water and a few drops of dishwashing powder and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. The burned residue will come out easily.

3. Clean up the bathroom

- Start with cleaning the surfaces with the basic mixture like we did in the kitchen. Stone or ceramic, floor or wall tiles… everything can be cleaned with it.

- Sprinkle a fistful of baking soda in the toilet seat, scrub with brush and then rinse. It will deodorize and sparkle like new. - Floor tiles can also be cleaned with ½ cup of baking soda and a bucket full of warm water.

- For stubborn stain of rust in shower, sink or faucet or even the water stain in the toilet seat; mix 1 cup of vinegar with ½ cup of baking soda and clean the stain with it.

- Soak your hairbrush and comb in warm water and 1 tablespoon baking soda mixture once in a month to keep it clean.

- 1 cup of baking soda added to wash cycle with regular washing powder will brighten up the clothes and make them fragrant.

- Baking soda is a good natural disinfectant for baby’s clothes. It would also make it fresh and fragrant.

- To make your sheets and towels extra fluffy, add ½ cup of baking soda in the rinse cycle.

- Make a paste with ¾ cup baking soda and ½ cup of warm water and apply in stains before putting it in washing machine. If it is a tough stain leave it for 2 hours before washing.

4. ​Sparkle up the indoor

-  Before cleaning up the upholstery or vacuuming the carpet or sofa, sprinkle it with baking soda and let it sit for 15 minutes. It will remove the odour and leave it smelling fresh and clean.

- Leave an opened box of baking soda in your wardrobe. It is a purifier and will keep your clothes fresh.

- You can clean your kid’s stuffed toys and other toys with baking soda. It will become cleaner and disinfected too. Just sprinkle a fistful of soda on the toys and leave it to do its work for 15-20 minutes. Dust it or wipe it depending on the toys you are cleaning.

- Sprinkle baking soda in the inner soles of the shoes to remove unpleasant odour from them and make it clean.

​6. Let’s move outdoor

- Clean up your outdoor furniture with wet sponge dipped in baking soda. It will increase the life of the furniture too.

- Use the basic baking soda mixture to clean the pool toys.

- Remove the dirty stains of oil and grease from the garage and drive way easily by sprinkling a handful of baking soda over the stains and then scrubbing and washing it with brush and water.
