Extra storage space is something that most of us desire, especially when living in small homes and tiny apartments. But keep in mind that ‘small’ doesn’t have to mean ‘cramped’ – that’s where clever storage areas can mean the difference between the two.

Fortunately, there exists a way to gain additional storage areas without having to add more legroom to our homes, and it comes in the form of godsend floating shelves. This can be a great way to not only keep our homes neat and tidy, but also add to the visual aesthetics of our interiors.

Want to hear more good news? Floating shelves are one of the easiest DIY projects, meaning that a lot of people can put these clever contraptions together themselves. They are pure perfection in any room (when installed and styled up correctly), as any professional interior designer/decorator will vouch, regardless of whether being added to the living room, the bedroom, the kitchen, or that quirky corner in-between the bathroom and hallway.

Let’s take a look at some clever design ideas (and useful storage tips) that pertain to floating shelving.

1. Floating shelves as an overhead display

Maximise your space the quick and easy way – add some shelving above your living room sofa to immediately draw the eye to the space above it. The additional surface provides the perfect spot for displaying artwork, your book collection, some travel keepsakes, a few potted plants, etc.

2. An open culinary space

Make your kitchen feel much more open and airy by substituting traditional closed cabinets with narrow floating shelves. This is especially useful if your kitchen is on the small side, as closed cabinets can make it feel even more closed in.

3. A light and airy bathroom

Want to make your cramped bathroom feel more light and airy? Floating shelves, that’s how! Fortunately, they’re available in just about any size, meaning even the tiniest bit of wall space should be adequate to hang up a shelf or three.

4. Let your floating shelves create a statement wall

Who says wallpaper is the only way in which a simple wall can enjoy attention? If your space is mostly filled with neutral colours and clean lines, adding linear, neat rows of floating shelves can be the ideal touch.

The fun part will be stacking your favourite décor items in an organised manner to give that space some character. Photographs in frames of the same materials, colour-coded books, etc. But to avoid the too-clinical look, add in a surprise piece (like a vase with colourful flowers or a striking art piece) here and there.

5. Floating shelves in cute shapes

Luckily, floating shelves are available in a myriad of shapes – imagine how boring life would have been had all of them been simple, flat linear designs?

Depending on your interior style, you can bring in shelving in curious shapes to add a fun touch. And floating shelves in cute shapes is an especially clever way to bring some character to a child’s room while still keeping the clutter element at bay.

6. Create slim storage

Use a slender scrap of wall space to your advantage by hanging a vertical row of narrow floating shelves. For a more modern effect, ensure that the shelving are in a neutral colour similar (but not completely identical) to the wall.

7. Camouflage your floating shelves

On the other hand, making your shelves and walls identical in colour can ensure a striking ‘floating’ effect for those décor pieces, as well as an overall clean look for the room.

8. Flaunt what you love

In addition to helping us store items, floating shelves are also ideal for displaying what we want others to see. Proud of those new wine glasses you purchased? Want to show off that crockery set you inherited? Keen for others to marvel at your impressive collection of cookbooks? Set up a floating shelf or two against the wall and start stacking!

9. Stay organised in a small space

Floating shelves are a stylish storage solution in any space, but they’re especially transformative in tight areas where one has to use every available nook and cranny.

With these shelves reaching up to the ceiling, this room’s storage potential is maxed out the stylish (and neat) way.

10. An instant office

Set down a comfy office chair and table and you’ve just about created your very own study area. But hang some floating shelves and your work space is sure to function more efficiently.

11. Fill up a weird nook with shelves

We all have those quirky little areas in our home that are just eating up space. Ever considered filling up yours with cut-to-fit floating shelves for a customised look?

This is a smart way to make the most of corners, arches, slim wall spaces, etc. while keeping the rest of the room’s clutter factor in check.

12. Let floating shelves draw the eye

When it comes to slim hallways, we don’t always have a lot of options to bring in style and personality. But giving your hallway a double style-and-storage upgrade can be as simple as hanging up a shelf against that wall.

Opt for a long shelf that will draw the eye into the rest of the hallway, making it seem longer and, thus, more spacious. Make sure it’s deep enough to hold a few family photos, colourful artworks and maybe even a few books. For added effect, hang up a mirror to aid in visual spaciousness while ensuring more texture, pattern and colour (in its frame) for your hallway.

13. What to remember when installing your own floating shelves

We don’t recommend that just anybody picks up a hammer and starts nailing shelves into walls. But those with decent DIY experience can certainly help themselves. And for added ease (and safety), keep the following in mind:

• With a stud finder, locate a wall stud in the area where you wish to add your shelves. Try to get at least one fastener into a stud.

• Use a pencil to mark the position where each fastener will go and a level to check that your marks are straight.

• It’s always wise to use anchors, which are rated by the weight they are capable of holding. To be extra safe, choose anchors that can hold more weight than you plan to put on the shelves.

Always be sure to discuss your project with someone experienced, like a seasoned carpenter, builder or even someone at your local hardware store. Describe the type of walls in your home (plaster, drywall, brick, etc.) and what you wish to hang on them.
