When it comes to designing any area of the home it’s important to think about your personal identity, and how this is reflected in the décor. Your home is the one place in the world that’s yours alone, so it’s important that you shape it in a way that’s meaningful to you, after all, you must feel comfortable in a space that’s truly yours.

The home can be an extension of who you are as a person and a means of demonstrating that to the world. No more so is this the case than the dining room, as it’s the area of the home in which you’re most likely to entertain guests.

How does one go about doing this? Read on to find out.

1. Pick a style

Perhaps the easiest way to begin designing a dining room that reflects your personality is to pick a style that speaks to you. Maybe you’re warm, family orientated person and air towards a rustic look?

Perhaps you’re neat, organised and direct opting for a minimalist design? Or maybe you’re modern and edgy; going for an industrial style such as the dining room pictured above.

2. Think about the use of space

OK, so we’ve settled on a style and we know the room’s dimensions, but how will we use this space?

The room’s layout can say a lot about you as a person – do you want a very open, fluid feeling to the room? Or do you want space clearly defined?

In the above example, symmetry and organisation seem to be defining factors in how the room has been shaped; with a parallel counter and dining table that suggests organisation and functionality.

3. Think about the colour

A fundamental aspect of the room’s design will be the colour, and that colour choices will depend heavily on your personality.

The bright, almost turquoise blue of this dining room suggests calm, and its bright tone makes the room appear warmer and more welcoming.

4. Decide on the furniture

The style and colour of the furniture you choose will depend to some extent on the other factors we’ve already discussed, but it remains an important point to consider when designing a dining room according to your personality. Do not purchase all your furniture at once from a chain store, as this is guaranteed to take any personality and originality out of your dining room. Consider the materials, shape and size, and what they say about you. For example, a round dining table suggests equality, and makes communication easier.

5. Pick a few art pieces

The artwork in your dining room will be the icing on the cake, the final touch that ties the room together. Taste in art is also highly personal, and a great way for you to express who you are in your home. Choose art that fits your chosen style, but also try to find pieces that really speak to you as a person.
