Depending on who you are, you're either dreading the arrival of autumn and winter – or you simply couldn't be happier. The approaching season change starts with cooler evenings and a gradual shift of the hues of the leaves, ending in barren trees and mornings where you can see your breath. It's a time when festivities are moved indoors, sun hats are exchanged for scarves and cute, fresh bouquets of flowers are put away for candles, chunky blankets and cosy pillows.

Autumn is almost upon us. As a homeowner, there are quite a few things you can do to prepare for the upcoming season – both to take better care of your home and your social life. Prepping the exterior of your home is just as important as the interior and we have a few tips and pointers for both to make your life easier.

1. Prep the fireplace with a good cleaning

It'll be just about time to whip out the fireplace again and it's always best to make sure you're doing a yearly cleaning to ensure both safety and proper usage.  A clogged fireplace can place serious risk on both you, and everyone that enters your home. It can also be a common place for animals to reside, so keeping them out of harms way is always a positive.

Keep this to the professionals and hire a chimney sweep! They will have it done in only a few hours and your fireplace will be ready to go in no time!

2. Cosy-up with a high-pile rug

During the summer it's common to whisk the rugs and carpeting away in favour of bare, hardwood flooring, or hemp and sisal-based floor coverings. These floor coverings are great for rooms that receive direct sunlight and especially for areas where sand, dirt and grime might easily infiltrate a home.

Switch to cosy carpeting and high-pile rigs during the fall and winter months. As shoes will be removed at the door, a sense of comfort will be sought in the interior of your home. This homeowner has placed a large-scale, high-pile rug over the entirety of the living room for a super fall-ready look!

3. Bring back the heavier bedding

Cotton bedding is definitely best for the summmer months, as it's light, fresh and allows a high-level of air into the sleeping area. Make sure that you neatly pack away all cotton bedding and lighter comforters as fall and winter approach. Pull winter bedding out of storage, give it a thorough cleaning and add it to your new sleeping pattern to keep yourself warm and cosy into the cool autumn nights.

These cosy accessories would look great in this bedroom too!

4. Switch out the summer clothes for winter clothes

The next change to get your home autumn-ready is one that a lot of homeowners dread – packing away the fun summer dresses, shorts and bathing suits, in favour of sweaters, pants and scarves.

Carefully organise and pack away all summer clothes and place them in a labeled boxes that will be easily accessible next year. Place all sweaters and shawls on shelving, and neatly hang pants, dresses and any professional clothing in order to make room for everything.

For smaller accessories, scarves, winter hats and gloves, etc; add some extra storage containers to avoid everything looking over-cluttered.

5. Bring back the big blankets and chunky pillows

Get rid of the bright coloured wall art, summery, metallic pillows and fresh flowers. All of this can be exchanged for candles, book shelves, big blankets and chunky pillows to make your living room or reading nook autumn-ready! Don't worry about everything looking perfect and nice, throw your pillows and blankets on your sofa for a super-cosy look.

6. Prep the exterior of late-night gatherings

Don't think that cooler nights means no more outdoor grill and dinner parties, pool parties or social gatherings. Well, maybe pool parties wouldn't be the best option. Grab blankets, comfy chair coverings and plenty of outdoor candles and take your dinner parties outside – even if it's too cold the entire time, invest in lots of candles or even mobile outdoor heaters, serve up some coffee or hot chocolate and allow your guests to breathe as much fresh air as possible!

For many, us included, the autumn is a fantastic time of cooler weather, cosiness, intimate social gatherings and long nights on the sofa with tea – we hope that's what they mean now for you too with our great advice. Another option would be to prep your home for a great, cosy reading corner in lieu of the colder weather and less outside time we tend to get!
