Now it's time to get inspired!

1. A living centrepiece

This staircase really transcends its function to become a true work of art. Once again using floating glass, the stairs wrap around an awe-inspiring cylindrical aquarium that forms the centrepiece of the room. The aquarium can be viewed from any angle, allowing it's gorgeous blue hues to mesmerise you wherever you are, with the LED light fixtures adding a futuristic element that looks really impressive sparkling off the glass surfaces.

2. A magnificent glass staircase

This unique creation comes from the Railing London firm, a beautiful cantilever staircase built from toughened laminated glass. The magical floating effect contributes an ethereal element, complemented by the LED bannister running along the wall; perfect for when your stumbling around in the middle of the night looking for a midnight snack.

The staircase combines with the wooden floor for an elegant decor that's both simple and stunning.

3. Stairs with a view

This fantastically modern project features a staircase positioned next to a glass wall that angles into the ceiling, providing views of the city and the sky above. The natural light gives clarity to the clean lines of the home, while the window frames a gorgeous image of city life.

This is a great example of how architects can incorporate the style of the surrounding environment into the home, resulting here in industrial chic.

4. The elegance of black

This spiral staircase goes with a timeless decor classic, the striking combination of black on woodgrain. The result is sophisticated and professional, and the staircase pairs nicely with the industrial brick feature wall. The white walls and the light woodgrain on the floor allows the black to really stand out, a lesson in keeping it simple, but creative.

5. Fitting for an art studio

With an upper level completely composed of glass this room is absolutely flooded in natural light. The effect is very contemporary, reminding us of a modern gallery, but if you're not careful you can end up with blinding reflections, especially with added glass features such as the bannister of the stairs seen here. To counter this the stairs are black, designed to suck in light, while the decorations are placed so as not to be affected by direct sunlight, an expert study in the use of shadow in design.

Another interesting effect at play here is that they have unified the space over two floors, which really opens a home up, and creates the impression of enormous space.

6. A cubist work of art

If you're a fan of minimalist art, there's no need to go out and purchase a masterpiece to hang on the wall, instead you should consider incorporating the style into the construction of your home, and these geometric stairs are a perfect example! LED lighting on the steps brings out the woodgrain, and produces an inviting glow, creating a sense of warmth, not to mention adding a safety feature. This modern design, which looks both sturdy and distinguished, really adds a lot of class to this home.

7. A graceful curve

This elegant set of stairs has all the motion of a ballet dancer, with a dynamic curl that perfectly matches the refined style of the decor. A big part of the dynamism when seen from this angle is the way the railings appear connected at the top, produce an impressionistic crescent, and then meet again at the bottom.

The dark hardwood is rich and sumptuous, a detail that the designers obviously recognised when the opted for glass barriers beneath the classic wooden railing. This staircase looks like it wouldn't be out of place in an upscale opera house or a cosmopolitan living room!

8. Functional and beautiful

Acutely aware of shrinking floor areas, we talk a lot about multipurpose spaces here at homify, and this is yet another innovative example. The area under the stairs tends to be negative space, completely unused and wasted, but with this fantastic shelving unit the designers have found a fantastic solution.

The shelves are limited by the stairs, creating a unique appearance, while the straight lines and plain white works in harmony with the traditionally styled bannister and adornments. What a great idea!

9. A hall of fame

This simple idea is going to inspire you in your own home, because it can work well in any space. Here we see the walls are covered in a neat line of identical photograph frames, perfectly straight, and leading up the stairs. The effect is that of a hall of fame, repurposed in a personal space to display your favourite family photos or pieces of art.

The stairways represent a visual access point, drawing lines between the framed pieces, and providing a colour contrast that helps the black to stand out. The skylights ensure there is plenty of natural light for enjoying the art, and finding your way!

10. Industrial charm

To finish our list we've got a fantastic idea that will work in any space, but looks especially spectacular in this industrial style home. By using recessed LED lights between the staircase and the wall your stairs will stand out, with the geometric pattern adding a stunning design flourish. Alternately you can use rope lights to follow the decline of the steps for the same effect, perfect if you're only renting.

We hope these great ideas have got you thinking about new and exciting possibilities for your own staircases! For more household tips, check out these clever storage solutions!
